In November 2018, as reported by CBR, it was reported that the DC Universe was looking to cast Kevin Durand in a key role for their upcoming live-action series Swamp Thing. Shortly after this was announced, it was confirmed that Durand would take on the role of Jason Woodrue in Swamp Thing. The series is expected to premiere in May and will be exclusive to the DC Universe subscription streaming service, joining DC Daily, Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Doom Patrol, which is set for release on the 15th of February 2019.
Deadline states that the official description of Durand’s character in Swamp Thing, Jason Woodrue, will be a prickly genius without an equal in the field of biogenetics, which he knows all too well. Woodrue is requested to come to a town in Louisiana to study the unique properties of its nearby swamp. The scientist then becomes obsessed with unlocking the potential that’s contained within the swamp, which leads to “tragic and monstrous consequences.”
Fans of DC may recognise Kevin Durand’s new character Jason Woodrue by any number of names, with the complicated comic book history of Woodrue lending him to many identities. Woodrue, in fact, appeared in comics almost a decade before Swamp Thing and has gone by the names, including Floronic Man and Plant Master, per DC Comics.
Kevin Durand is very accustomed to starring in television series, playing reoccurring characters in Dark Angel (2001), Touching Evil (2004), Lost (2008 and 2010), and Vikings (2015-16). In the horror drama series The Strain (2014-2017), he played one of the leading roles of Vasiliy Fet, in which he and the rest of the main cast hunted the vampiric strigoi. In Swamp Thing, much of Durand’s will play a particularly villainous role, as opposed to hunting the evil as he did in The Strain.
On the big screen, Durand was one of the few bright spots of Legion (2010), in which he portrayed Gabriel. The Canadian actor’s first role in a film was as Bazooka Marksman Joe in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), going on to be in The Butterfly Effect (2004), Smokin’ Aces (2007), Citizen Gangster (2011), and Noah (2014). Among fans of the comic book and superhero movie genres, Durand may be recognised as Fred Dukes, otherwise known as The Blob, from X-Man Origins: Wolverine (2009).
The rest of the main cast for Swamp Thing has turned out rather well for the DC Universe exclusive series. Taking the lead role of Alex Holland is Andy Bean, who played the role of Greg Knox in Power (2014-2016). While the character of Alex Holland is Swamp Thing, the hero will be played by Derek Mears, who has also played Dwarfstar in The Flash (2018). Crystal Reed joined the cast to play CDC doctor Abby Arcane; Maria Sten will play reporter Liz Tremayne; Jeryl Prescott will appear as the fortune teller Madame Xanadu; and Avery Sunderland, who wants to harness the power of the swamp himself, will be portrayed by Will Patton. Jennifer Beals, Ian Ziering, and Leonardo Nam will feature in recurring roles.
Swamp Thing will begin with CDC doctor Abby Arcane coming back to her home of Houma, Louisiana, tasked with investigating a virus that originates from the nearby swamp, and has proven to be deadly. In Houma, Abby’s new scientist friend Alec Holland tragically dies, but something in the properties of the swamp means that he maybe isn’t dead after all.
Swamp Thing is yet to be given an official release date, with May 2019 being heavily rumoured, but principal photography began in November 2018.
